The solution says we can add probabilities only if the events are mutually exclusive.
Aren’t the events in the question mutually exclusive?! Why are they subtracting 0.06 from the 0.5?!

Mutually exclusive means that when one occurs, the other does not occur
For example Heads and Tails are mutually exclusive
Raining in town and having pop quiz can happen simultaneously, thus they are not mutually exclusive events

Doesn’t the phrase “the events occur independently of each other” mean it’s mutually exclusive?

No independent events and mutually exclusive events mean different when it comes to probability
