Math strategy doubt- masked vs fanned

in this instance, for the second blank i had chosen the word “fanned” for semantics - as in nurture a long standing hostility.

“Their mutual teasing seemed harmless, but in fact it fanned a long standing hostility.”

For which, in the answer choices, alleviated would have been correct. Please let me know where I went wrong.

The screenshot is a little confusing to me…why is produced replaced with alleviated? Was Greg trying to demonstrate a double possibility (bitter/alleviated)? Could you share the video this came from?

Also, could you explain how predicting fanned lead to choosing alleviated? Did you mean that predicting fanned lead you to choose produced?

What is the word on top of “masked”?

contravened

i think he replaced produced with alleviated because he did not feel that “produced” sat very well as an answer choice in this case.

I predicted fanned, but that was incorrect.

I don’t think their mutual teasing, which seemed harmless, would alleviate a long-standing hostility. They are covering up their hostility, therefore it is masked

Fanned isn’t that bad of a word choice. Sure, it’s a little off, but it’s much closer conceptually to masked than it is to alleviated. What is your definition of alleviated?

Also, can you share which video this came from?
