Now, I’m trying to break the question
1- the colon ( : ) indicates support, which means the two ideas support each other.
2- I will solve the first part first.
3- the phrase ( is forced to correct them ) means that there was something wrong before. So, I will give this phrase a +ve connotation. So, the idea before it must be the opposite.
Answer is D.
May anyone evaluate my thought process?
I’m hesitant because I didn’t see an exact word that identify the relation between the two sides in the 1st part of the sentence.
I haven’t checked the answer yet but do let me know. It should be A
From your points 1 - is correct it does show support for both side
From 2 - While solving the first part you stated (is forced to correct) which does mean something was wrong but refused to before the blank implies that they did not accept whatever was wrong.
And since, ( : colon) expresses support so now they have changed and injustices can no longer be tolerated.
My thought process:
a) there is a colon which indicates a support.
b) for the first blank, using the time strategy after demonstrations the community is forced to correct injustices, so before the tension they didn’t correct them/acknowledge them.
c) the second part is a support to the first idea. meaning the second blank will be same as the first blank, but notice the no there which means you need a negative word to convey the same meaning as the first part, so injustices can no longer be ignored.
The way that I would do this one is first notice that if you’re “forced” to do something, you weren’t doing it before. So if they’re “forced” to correct their injustices, they were ignoring them before or “not addressing” them.
Yes, for the first blank address is acceptable but for the second blank eliminated doesn’t fit because injustices can no longer be eliminated addresses a negative meaning where as colon(":") suggests otherwise.
Ah, please ignore that. Like @nazishakhtar51 said ‘address’ can be considered, but ‘eliminated’ cannot since it contradicts the first idea… and we want something that supports the first idea.
For me I subconsciously use the time = change method. If you start reading from “a community” to the end, the colon separates the two different periods of time/ two different states; one state BEFORE the demonstrations forced a change and one state AFTER the change has occurred. The first blank says what the community was doing before the change so it will be the opposite of the second. The only true contrast in that list is A) acknowledge…ignore.
Also, the fact that the demonstrations “forced” the community to “correct” it’s behaviour suggests that the behaviour wasn’t great in the past and needed to be changed. Therefore, in this context of “injustices”, the community must have been not facing up to the injustices or “refusing to ACKNOWLEDGE” them. This meant that, after the change, they had to acknowledge them = “no longer be IGNORED”.
