Can Someone walk me through the answer. It is E.
My own set of words were (i) give credence (ii) concept.

My Reasoning:
Since 2nd part of the sentence starts with even and it says: that even the more central idea was more or less a theoretical thing (concept) , so he did not pay heed/attention to the idea of race (gives no credence).

Any help would be appreciated since old gre walkthroughs have been put down.

The semi-colon is used to indicate that the first part of the sentence will agree with the second. Let’s move to the second part as it seems easy, even the much more important idea of species earned some respect from Darwin’s method, the first part should also say the same thing. So the idea of race should also be of some worth to Darwin, not entirely bogus. That’s why you choose “reject”.
