I chose option (A) because of the word dangerous. Correct answer is option (B).

True, option (B) makes more sense than (A), but I find “no evidence for choosing” (B). Help!

The sentence can be simplified as -
The novelist W.Thackeray considered criminals so dangerous, that he criticized Dickens’ for making the characters so likeable/harmless.

Basically, W.Thackeray criticized Dickens’ writings since they didn’t fit well with his opinion on thieves. The blank should be the opposite of “dangerous”.

Hence, B. riveting which means “compelling” would be the best answer.

Ah right. The evidence was in the grammar.
Got it.
I like the way you put it.
