OG Verbal Mixed Practice Set, #6

For this question, I easily got blank 1 and blank 3. But, for blank 2 I was really stuck on D(marginalized) vs. F(isolated). Aren’t they basically synonyms? What makes D better than F? I assumed that D had a more negative connotation thats why I picked F instead. Another reason why I didn’t pick D is because saying that “unlike many other mechanized industries, where machines marginalized workers…” comes off as the machines relegating the workers to a lower status. However, there isn’t IMO any evidence for that sort of thing happening. Below is the actual 3 blanker and answers:

6. In the nineteenth century the (i) ____________ advanced mechanical printing techniques made it possible for newspaper owners to print newspapers cheaply and in mass quantities, but unlike many other mechanized industries, where machines (ii)____________ workers, the new printing machines required trained compositors to run them, thereby (iii)____________ the demand for skilled printing labor.

blank 2: D.marginalized; E.intrigued; F.isolated

Blank 3: G.ignoring; H.anticipating; I.increasing
