Pairing (SE) Skill Building

Hi, for the following question:

I found “confound” and “impress” as synonyms on Google:

Both have “take someone’s breath away” as a common synonym. Can you please clarify why the pairing is incorrect?

Thanks!

The GRE will test you on the meaning of confound which means to confuse.

As you’ve identified, only a very specific context will make these a pair.
If you’re tested using the same specific context with the same nuance, then absolutely.

However generally from their base definitions, these are not a pair

the “similar” words google gives you are completely irrelevant when pairing - they range from very similar to barely similar. Just stick to the basic definitions.
