The GRE will test you on the meaning of confound which means to confuse.
As you’ve identified, only a very specific context will make these a pair.
If you’re tested using the same specific context with the same nuance, then absolutely.
However generally from their base definitions, these are not a pair
the “similar” words google gives you are completely irrelevant when pairing - they range from very similar to barely similar. Just stick to the basic definitions.
