They are talking about two different people. Contrasting in your way wont work. The passage talks about who came first. So the claim of first modern biographer that synonyms with precedence.
For example, Johson could have been named first modern biographer instead of Boswell. Here the contrast lies.
i.e. I am father of medicine yet you could be named father of medicine because of xyz. Here “I” vs “you” is the contrast
