Percentiles Problem

Hi, everyone!

Quick question in this problem from Quant Foundation:

According to the image above, the answer is 60, and I get why. However, I got a little confused with the explanation of the 0-99th percentile groups. Using that definition, the 60th to 89th percentile groups would fall within the range of 61-80 scores. Do you see what I mean? Or am I missing something? In that case, the answer cannot be 60.

But this definition doesn’t apply here. If I understand you correctly, a “60th-percentile group” would include all students whose percentile ranks fall between 60.0 and 60.9; however, the question is asking specifically about the 60th percentile, not the entire “group”.

Sure. But, since I was using the percentile definition from the Overwhelmed program, I thought:

  1. Being at a certain percentile meant being in the definition of a percentile group (0-99th convention)
  2. Using that definition from point 1, and as understood from the Overwhelmed study plan, being at the 60th percentile means being in the positions 601 to 610; in that case, the test scores of that group would be between 61 and 80

I think my question is more about when to apply the definition of being at a certain percentile from the Overwhelmed study plan (percentile group), which is why I got confused.
