Hello. Following passage is from the ETS OG.
I am a bit confused by the above question. I eliminated B, D and D because they are off topic. I eliminated E because the passage states the opposite ("but the symphonies’ sound is distinctively his.)
I chose A because, in the last sentence, the passage clearly states that rock listeners regard Glass’ music as ‘high art’. Correct answer, however, is E. But I am unable to understand this.
Also, I am quite confused about what does the phrase “addresses which of the following issues” in the question acutally mean? Maybe this could help me eliminate answer choice A. Thanks.
P.S. Is the question asking for the main idea?
This is basically an inference style question asking which issue related to Glass’s use of popular elements in his compositions is addressed in the passage. The answer requires identifying the main topic that the passage is discussing or the main concern that the author is trying to address.
Now, the main topic of the passage is how Philip Glass revitalize the use of popular elements in classical music and made it unique which appeal to those who are more familiar with rock music.
The option A states that how it regraded by people who prefer rock to classics . Now, if you read it very carefully, the passage is not necessarily listing the opinion of the people who listen to Glass’s music but rather author’s opinion on how Glass music should be perceived by listeners. Hence, the info given in the passage v/s what option A are stating two different things but they’re phrased in such a way which makes you think they;re telling the same thing!
Now, ETS folks are being very cheeky in here, look at how they use the same terminology that is used in the passage as in the answer choice. And to top that, they made it the first Option (A) . Shameful behavior from them !!
