Prompt: Governments should prioritize environmental sustainability over economic growth when the two are in conflict.

Modern society often faces a dilemma in choosing between protecting the natural environment and prioritizing economic growth. Some people might argue that economic growth is an absolute necessity to improve the standard of living. The assertion suggests that the government should prioritize environmental sustainability over economic growth when both are in conflict. I mostly agree with the statement because the environmental damage done while carrying out economic development activities is often irreversible and can result in massive long-term financial costs. However, I do concede that foundational economic development is a necessary prerequisite for the smooth functioning of society and transitioning to sustainable development.
First of all, protecting nature is absolutely vital because ecological destruction caused by the construction of roads and infrastructure is often permanent and cannot be restored. When industries prioritize constructing buildings by destroying natural habitats for a quick profit, they are permanently damaging the fragile ecosystem and food chains that living beings rely on for survival. For instance, historically, many large industries have destroyed natural flora for commercial activities. Such activities have threatened the population of natural pollinators such as bees, consequently affecting the food supply we rely upon. Furthermore, the eradication of grey wolves in Yellowstone national park for protecting commercial livestock caused overgrazing due to growing population of elk in the absence of predators. Consequently, this caused riverbank erosion and loss of plant life. Ultimately, this type of environmental collapse may cause severe flooding and degradation of water quality, forcing the government to spend millions to repair the damage. Therefore, economic activities meant for short-term profit can often do long-term or permanent damage to the environment.
Secondly, prioritizing environmental sustainability can actually protect the long-term national economy. Damaged environments can cause deleterious health hazards and resource shortages which may affect the productivity of the citizens, hence slowing down the local economy. For instance, in many metro cities such as Bangalore, rapid industrialization led to the unregulated construction of buildings over natural lakes and forests. While aggressive expansion generated short-term profits, it eventually depleted the water table causing water shortages and polluted the air due to traffic and continuous construction. Consequently, to address the issues, the government was forced to transport water from neighboring regions, causing massive financial costs. Similarly, increased health problems because of the polluted environment reduced the productivity of the working class and slowed down the local economy. Therefore, although rapid economic growth can generate short-term profits but they can cause a huge financial burden in the long term.
In contrast, while prioritizing environmental sustainability is a must, some degree of basic economic growth is required for the smooth functioning of society, and it also lays the foundation for future sustainable development. For instance, sustainable development activities such as installation of solar power grids, usage of electric vehicles, building water treatment facilities require funding from tax revenue, which in turn necessitates a stable economy. Therefore, developing a basic transportation system and commercial spaces is required for the growth of corporate sector and stable workforce. Additionally, various sustainable steps can be taken in the construction of these basic infrastructures such as avoiding the destruction of natural habitats by designing spaces where insfrastructure and nature can coexist.
In conclusion, the government must protect the natural environment to ensure long-term environmental sustainability. While basic economic growth acts as a foundation for sustainable development, environmental sustainability must be given precedence, as damage to natural habitats is often irreversible and can have harmful effects, both on public health and the nation’s financial costs. A country can only achieve true, lasting success if it preserves its environment for all future generations.
