PLS! My verbal score has ridiculously decreased. What is happening?

Hi there gregmat peers! I have been prepping for the GRE since last year…

In Dec 2020, I got a 156 verbal and in july 2021, It dropped ~6 points (PP3 of 152)…something is not right here. I feel like the verbal is getting MUCH harder especially the SE and TC. More specifically ETS seems to be throwing completely obscure words and making the logic on SE much harder. Can someone else opine on this?

I am not sure how to prepare anymore as I have exhausted all preparation material including GRE big book. I stuck to gregmat skill series, and I have also memorized gregmat words and ALL magoosh words (basic, common, advanced). I know those words inside out.

Normally the strategy is to do SE/TC then RC but im thinking that now the strategy should be RC> SE>TC. Time has always been an issue for me but at least the SE/TC were easier to get through faster previously.

Can someone also PLEASE discuss /provide your thoughts? I have taken this test already a few times since last year, so I know im not going crazy with seeing the verbal diff get harder. I dont know what to do…

Greg gave two GRE tests this year and his review for both is available in here : https://new.gregmat.com/course/non-sequenced-miscellaneous-classes

Hi @divya2020, I gave the exam on 25th July and got a Verbal score of 157. I did not find any obscure words or sentences where I couldn’t apply Greg’s strategy. In fact, I found SE to be fairly easy to skim through and the challenge for me was the critical reasoning questions and some 3 blankers, mainly because of their trickiness. I would suggest that you go learn Greg’s vocab list by heart. Cheers!

thanks @asingh1 good to know! Maybe I had a HORRIBLE day haha. How did you prepare for RC and how was time for you? I personally felt that time was an issue for me bc of the convoluted logic.

Some RC questions were tricky for me but that was mostly because of the fact that I was under pressure. The passages I got in the real test were at par with the Big Book passages although I felt that the answer choices were a bit trickier. But that’s my opinion and I would suggest going through all of Greg’s videos religiously because that helped me. At the end of the day, it’s all about the fact that whether or not you’ve played the GRE game well. I scored 321 and I’m pretty happy about it.

Thank you @asingh1! So im assuming your quant was around 164…which is amazing. Any advice for how you prepped for that?

I feel that I could’ve done much better in Quant but I got flustered at the time of the exam. For quant, I would suggest watching all of Greg’s videos as well as Big Book and Manhattan 5lb. Maths has always been my strong area so I didn’t have a lot trouble in that section.
