[POTD] IF AB=BD=DF=AC=CE=EG, what is the ratio of the area

Hey Greg ,

I have a question regarding POTD , how did you conclude that BC will also be ‘x’?

Suppose angle B and angle C are both 50 degrees , in this case the triangle wont be equilateral.

So how can we conclude that those triangles are equilateral?

If its an assumption , are we allowed to assume that?

I mean , In case it isnt equilateral , the ratio might not work

Looking forward to hear from you
Thanks in advance

Are we allowed to answer this question? I asked since I noticed you were asking Greg himself.
And, you tagged this wrong. This question belongs to quant category.

Yes please! , anyone’s help would be appreciated

Sure you can.

In my humble opinion, this is not an issue of whether the triangle is equilateral or not; it is more about properties of “simliliar triangles”. In this picture, I don’t see why greg concluded it is an equilateral triangle either. But as long as we know these 3 trangles are simliar trangles, we don’t need to bother the angle.
As you assumed angle B and C are 50 degrees, it won’t affect the truth which BC:DE:FG=1:2:3, thus the ratio among the areas of three triangles (ABC ADE AFG) is 1:4:9 right? Thus, the answer to this question won’t change. 5:3 always stands regardless of whether ABC is equilateral triangle or not.

Maybe this is irrelevant, but I spotted a grammar mistake here. Look forward to hearing

… Am I not allowed to change typo here? I’m eating while typing lol.

You sure are. I just pointed that out in a light-hearted manner; a minute later and I wouldn’t have seen it.

P.S: the “…” is because Discourse requires at least two characters.

Oh cool. Mate

@chloel97 Thanks

hey, isn’t the answer 5:3 ?

You are right. My mistake here.
