In the image above, greg mentions later writers as negative, however im confused as to why is this considered negative
also, the video mentions that we can assume it to be postive too, but if that is the case, then wouldnt the entire 2nd blank in blank 2 be negative?
Good question! I think what Greg’s doing with the +/– signs is using them to track contrast, not necessarily tone. The sentence says later writers esteemed Austen more highly than her peers did. That means her peers were less positive — so relatively speaking, later writers are the more positive group.
Greg marks “later writers” with a “–” and “peers” with a “+” not to say peers were more positive, but just to show the direction of the comparison. It’s a tool for thinking through the sentence logic. So even though “later writers” are positive in meaning, the signs are there to help us follow the contrast. Hope that clears it up!
