Quant Comparison Manipulating the variables?

I am currently on the geometry section of gremats 2 month study plan. When dealing with Quant comparison questions where you do not know the number value for a problem you can create scenarios that are bigger or smaller than the other answer options. Now when dealing with questions with shapes with unknown values, Greg will on videos say that you can move the shape in different positions that will make it bigger or smaller than your answer options.

What I get confused by is that, in my head, I thought the shapes had to stay the same way they look on the problem. But by saying the unknown variable can be different values that inherently change the shape?

What I am asking is that shapes with unknown variables on Quant comparison problems do not stay the same shape since we do not know the number the shape can look different?
