Query about Question 11 from "(I'm Overwhelmed) Vocab Progress Quiz #18a" [8340]

It says the correct answer is “stopping”. Why isn’t it “countering”?

The definition of deflect is to change the course or direction of something, to make someone deviate

I also asked an AI chat and they agreed that “countering” is more fitting.

Reporter: “You are a terrible politician”

Politician A: Let’s talk about the World Cup.

Politician B: And you’re a terrible reporter.

Deflect = avoid criticism, “Changes subject to World Cup”

Counter = face criticism head on with a reprisal, by “Attacking Reporter”
