Why is the answer for this question not irreverent and impetuous? I thought both would pair to mean “careless” in the given sentence: Even though Shana has shown herself to be _________ on more than one occasion – in fact many occasions – Mark still places a great deal of faith in her words.

I am not sure why “precipitate” is the better option here.

These two words don’t create two equivalent sentences. Saying Shana is irreverent (disrespectful) is different from saying she’s impetuous (rash/hasty).

Precipitate/impetuous create two equivalent sentences.
