Question about order of operations

Is there any scenario in which -5^2 would = -25?

I had written in my notes a while back that when you have a negative number squared you should square it first and then apply the negative. However, almost every instance of doing this since writing that note the opposite has been true.

i.e. in this case: 2^2 - -7^2 would simplify to 4 + 49.

Greg says this equation is actually getting smaller in the arithmetic review video on the two month plan which contradicts my previous notes from him.

Any ideas as to why I might’ve written that rule in my notes would be a big help.

It all depends on how you work with numbers. For example -5^2=-(5^2)=-25 which is different from (-5)^2=25.
