Question from the verbal section - fossils

The researchers stated the fossil in question is not representative of _________ version of Homo sapiens given that its facial features _________ those of modern humans. They conceded, however, that its brain was _________ that of a human.

For the question above, it doesn’t make sense to me that the second blank needs to be “different from” modern humans, suggesting that the first blank should be something that means “modern”. However, the answer for the first one says “primeval”, which seems wrong. Am I missing something?

What word is setting a clue for modern in blank(i)? Because idea before blank (i) is fossil … Now , the ‘not’ may confuse anyone to think that the opposite of fossil goes in Blank(i) but if you continue to read the full sentence you’ll notice that the ‘not’ is contrasting modern human. Also, if you read-on after the full-stop, you will see the support for the contrast as words like ‘conceded’ & 'that of a human ’ hints towards we’re dealing with something different than a human.
