I started the overwhelmed plan and I watched all the videos of the module 1 part 1 but when it came to the quiz I got confused a bit with one question.
The questions asks about scenarios leading to operations resulting in a negative number.
Where I got stuck was that in the option mentioned in the explanation Greg opted for option four as correct but wouldn’t that be untrue for instance if the positive number is higher than the negative number wouldn’t that lead to a positive outcome?
Also, in the prepswift video Greg explained that any negative number with any kind of negative exponent will lead to a negative result then why did we not select the third and fourth options? I have also attached a screenshot of the specific time of the prepswift video because I deduced my options based on that understanding.
This is not me trying to rub in or point out a mistake, I’m just trying to get a better understanding of the concepts.
So it would be highly appreciated
Doesn’t matter: let’s try this with -5 and 7 respectively (I’m assuming by “the positive number is higher than the negative number” you mean |7| > |5|). In that case, we have the result as -5 - 7 = -12.
Those are two different things though? One is about addition/subtraction, while the other is about exponents.
Thanks understood the first part and realised my mistake.
Yeah the second part is about exponents. I was just wodering since a negative number with a power to a positve and negative number would also result in a negative outcome wouldn’t it?
lets says -5^5 (-5 to the power of 5)…wouldnt the outcome come to -3,125 because negative to the power of negative would result in a negative outcome
You mean negative raised to an odd power - that indeed is negative. In (-5)^5, 5 (which is the power) is positive.
Hi thank you for your reply just one last question.
What about an even power as per the operations screenshots above. Negative to the power of anything is a negative outcome so wouldn’t option 4 be the correct in the question above?
