Retaining ideas better in working memory while reading passages

While reading passages using the simplify or function strategies, I tend to forget ideas I’ve already summarized, especially as I do not note them down anymore. This could be because I am not consciously connecting each new idea with the bigger picture (summary of all previous ideas), but I am not sure if this is the issue.

I’m looking for suggestions on how to consciously work on this during untimed practice before going to timed practice.

I know that there might not be one right approach, so any suggestions are welcome.

My short term memory, like yours, I’d imagine, doesn’t hold more than a handful of things.

So when I read, I’m just trying to get the topic and whether the author is presenting information, opinions, or theories about that topic.

Just to make sure I’m understanding correctly: for each RC passage, you aim to create kind of a one-line summary (around 10–12 words) that captures the core elements you mentioned, ignoring all the other details before moving on to the questions.

pretty much! You can post a passage if you like and your summary and I’ll tell you mine afterwards.
