Sentence is a support, but the blank is an opposite

The blank probably fills out to “not extreme” or “mild”. However, the sentence is a support. Not sure how to understand this

That’s because there’s a “not” in the second idea, which negates the “extreme” to “mild”.

  • “… and perhaps stirred up feelings that a more extreme vocabulary would have aroused.”
  • “… and perhaps stirred up feelings that a more mild vocabulary would not have aroused.”

I suppose it indicates that the math strategy is applied to the ideas of the 2 parts rather than the specific word. Thanks
