Hi there, for this question, I still do not understand why the answer to the second blank is not vocal. A their campaigns hide important differences wouldn’t the candidate themselves be vocal? Any clarification is much appreciated.
Could you share what the evidence for vocal would be?
I’ll discuss the reasons for the correct answer
But first I’d like to understand your logic and where the issue might be
The way I understand it is this:
Political candidates are usually quite _____, YET their campaign advertisements HIDE important differences… slogans.
The yet indicates a contrast, and if a campaign ‘hides’ differences then it would be a contrast if the political candidate themselves ‘did not hide’ differences, i.e. are ‘vocal’ about their opinions.
The only way I see dissimilar making sense is that is we focus on the word ‘differences’, although that would not have been my first thought.
Thank you for any insight you can provide.
You’re focused on the word hide alone, you need to pay attention to the ideas not just words
The idea is that the campaigns hide important differences between the political candidates
You’re correct about the contrast between the second blank and this idea
Without looking the options, there are two things we can look at yes, hide and differences as contrast for the blank
But which part of this sentence is important to our second blank, Is it the fact that the campaigns are hiding things, or is it what they’re hiding
“Different” as the word in the blank makes the most sense because.
Political candidates are different but campaigns hide those differences.
Vocal makes less sense.
Political candidates are vocal but campaigns hide those differences. (What differences? Why is it being mentioned?)
Thank you for this clarification! I understand this better now
