Was doing some quick revision of some of the mistakes I made in PP2
I think for this question I immediately paired “impediment to” and “brake on” and saw it made sense with the sentence
Support via “:”
“refrained” on the right side
So the pair satisfied the left blank
But the answer is “a check on” and “a brake on”
First of all, it didn’t occur to me how “check” and “brake” can be synonyms
Secondly, why are check and brake a better pair than brake and impediment (or even check and impediment for that matter)
(All pairs are listed in google)
after the colon is the support, which is saying : A Journalist will not publish article if other(their paired journalist) doubted it, thus, the other journalist (paired journalist) is serving as a Judge (Blank).
Also its check on and not just check:

I think sam is mixing up the words “break” and “brake”
I understand that it’s the second one, which means to stop/ hinder something and this is why I paired it with “impendiment”
Unfortunately Greg has not uploaded section 2 for PP 2
Thank you so much for your answers though
Option (B ,E) and F are out . You’re left with A ,C and D → Blank can’t be negative thus C is also out . Thus, you’re left with only A and D

I think he just misspelled brake with break
Nah “brake” as far as I know is not a “time period during which a person stops doing something”
His 2nd definition
To be honest I am starting to think this question is bogus
Going to sleep now, thanks for your help
I think context is very important for this question
I am not refuting that “brake” means to slow something down
Sam however said that “brake” (according to you he meant brake) is the “time period where we pause activity” and that would be the definition of “break” not “brake”
“Brake” as the screenshot you shared, can be used to slow something down, it is not a time period itself
Coming back to the question, if brake means to slow something down (which I didn’t refute), then so does “impediment”, so I don’t see why it’s wrong to pair them
I think it’s just one of those cases that the pairing strategy fails to work
