Help me with a doubt in blank (i).
My own word is pretence or fake.
The reason being that Winkelman failed to neutralise (lower) the resentment of his peers. Therefore, his gesture of camradeship(friendship) is fake/pretence.
Am I wrong somewhere?

Blank ii is easier to do as it as the clue for that is cultivating those in power .
The blank (i) is asking what kind of gesture of friendship would have not made him resented by his peers

I still don’t get it. Is Winckelmann not portrayed as a negative person ? In sense, that he has not made any efforts to neutralize the resentment of his peers. So he is pretending to portray a fake gesture.
Am I misinterpreting the meaning of the sentence? How do you know that senstence is asking the would be gesture of Winckelmann?
So the sentence is build like this : Winkel friends feel resentments towards him and he wanted to reduce it via some gesture of comradeship but he failed to do so ( neglected to neutralize)
