TC and SE Help

Hi Everyone,

I was going through the TC and SE recorded lessons, and I came across this slide in Season 4, Session 8. The first blank makes sense to me, but the second blank is what I was struggling with. Based on the Math strategy, the 2nd blank should be negative, but you wouldn’t refer to “Literary Gems” as Negative, correct? This might be me bringing in outside knowledge, but I couldn’t wrap my head around it.

And then I also had a question regarding the slide shown below (Season 4, Session 9). I know the two ideas support each other because of the comma and the “so”, but I wasn’t sure how to come up with the answer choice for the first blank.

Habit, Tradition, and Ritual are basically synonyms here, so the eliminations would come from the adjectives. Based on “Acceding to Public Demand”, could you say the Public thought speeding was either “Controversial” or “Disquieting” because if they didn’t think it was an issue, they wouldn’t have asked legislators to implement the penalties?

Question 1:

Based on the Math strategy, the 2nd blank should be negative

Exactly.

but you wouldn’t refer to “Literary Gems” as Negative, correct?

Is the blank describing the value of the literary gems themselves or something else as it relates to the literary gems?

Question 2:

In theory, yes, it makes sense. However, there is no evidence in the sentence itself to support that speeding has any negative connotation in this universe.

In addition, there is a neutral definition of cherished: to entertain or harbor in the mind deeply and resolutely. Think of it as more in the lines of “deeply ingrained” than “loved and adored”.

Hey Alina,

I don’t understand what you mean by this. Could you explain?

Thank you,

Anouk

Imagine a controversial movie, one that some people love and some people hate. Whether the movie is good or bad in the absolute sense is not the issue–the issue is how people feel about it. In other words, we have the object itself vs. how people interact with the object.

So, if we apply those two categories to the Poe sentence using the blank and the literary gems, which is which?
