image so here why in the second blank disregard is not considered? if they disregarded that interpretation it means they are giving some credence to the losers story (as they are not against it) just leaving it to spread

Yeah, I see why one would choose disregard. Maybe disregarding the interpretation would imply that they weren’t worried. It could also not serve the purpose of giving credence. So maybe because of the ambiguity disregard is not considered. I could be wrong

If you are ignoring something, are you giving credence to it?

If the last line said, “…worrying about the costs of their triumph and thus paying little attention to historians’ interpretation of the the losers’ story,” or something like that, the answer would be disregard.

“Giving credence” is active and positive, so you want an active and positive synonymous phrase – thus “collude in” is the BETTER answer in this case.

The winners are concerned with some negative repercussions (cultural or moral costs). If they disregarded the loser’s story, the losers may become angry and resent them, which is what the winners are trying to avoid.

Consider this situation: If you won a sporting match and the losers thought you had won because of one good hit, but you had to see them every day after that, would you take the win on the field and somewhat agree with the loser’s opinion to avoid confrontation or disregard their opinion?
