Any population increase beyond a certain level necessitates greater ______ vegetable foods; thus, the ability of a society to choose meat over cereals always arises, in part, from _______ the number of people
A) reliance on…replenishing
B) production of…estimating
C) spending on…concealing
D) recourse to…limiting
E) attention to…varying
I’m having trouble with the second blank, if someone may help please ?
Now, thus ( indicate support )
the ability to choose meat over cereals always arises ( does this phrase mean that the consumption of meat will increase in part from what happens to people? and what is the role of in part here?
Any population increase beyond a certain level necessitates greater ______ vegetable foods; thus, the ability of a society to choose meat over cereals always arises, in part, from _______ the number of people
Big Population —> Choose Vegetable
____________ —> Choose Meat (Hence we need to decrease population)
“In part” means to some extent, not fully. Understanding the meaning of “in part” is important to solve the second blank.
So the second sentence can be rephrased as:
the ability of a society to choose meat over cereals always arises to some extent from _______ the number of people. Replenishing, concealing, varying does not fit the context.
Now we look the question as a whole. From first sentence, we can understand that population increase beyond certain level will necessitate a greater emphasis on vegetable foods, since population goes up, there are more people to feed. The second sentence is joined to the first sentence using “thus”, so the second sentence is a support. The ability of society to choose meat will then be decreased, because vegetables are in abundance. So the only way ability of choosing meat over grains can arise (which is mentioned in the question) is by controlling the population till the “certain level” mentioned is attained.
So the blank 1 should be a synonym of increasing and blank 2 should be a synonym of controlling.
I liked the way you explain it, but I’m trying to be more evidence-based.
Now, there could be two logics here:
1- When there are a lot of people, we need to increase veggies and decrease meat. ( this is the first idea )
or decrease veggies and increase meat.
Since we don’t have words for the second possibility, eliminate it.
Now, the first part and the second part are not happening at the same time right ?
I realized that I thought that the population already increased, so we need more veggies.
It doesn’t make sense in my mind that the population is already increased and we are having more vegies and we the ability to choose meat is high !
I explained my thought process that it is a double possibility TC. Then, I canceled the second possibility because no match. So, want to check can it be a double possibility question ?
Then, I’m trying to explain what did I think before the explanation of @jai and after.
