TC from GRE BIG BOOK, P+<50

The notion that a parasite can alter the behavior of a host organism is not mere fiction; indeed, the phenomenon is not even -------.
(A) observable
(B) real
(C) Comprehended
(D) rare
(E) imaginable

The answer is “rare”. I don’t see any evidence for rare.

The architects of New York’s early skyscrapers,
hinting here at a twelfth-century cathedral, there at
a fifteenth-century palace, sought to legitimize the
city’s social strivings by ------- a history the city did
not truly -------.
(A) revealing … deserve
(B) displaying. . desire
(C) evoking … Possess —> correct
(D) preserving … experience
(E) flouting … Believe

First blank(A, B, C) matches many , so 2nd will be deciding, I picked B because, I chose strivings as the hint, that a city won’t “desire” strivings.

What is the evidence of “possess”?
PS: I feel hinting<—>evoking is not a good enough analogy.

Can anyone help me with this?

Well truly desire doesn’t make sense to me…evoke and display both works as you said…the architects already built those buildings trying to show that people had social resentment by painting this history which actually the city did not truly ______. Now, you fill the blank. This is what the sentence. History is a fact, how can you desire it? Do B doesn’t work because of the latter option I e. desire

So to answer the first TC question: (Using Greg’s method)
The division is at the semi-colon, so a support. The idea being supported is the idea of parasites altering behavior being a reality. The second part would convey the same meaning/idea. Option (D) makes the most sense.

In addition, notice how they put not in the first part and not even in the second part of the sentence. Not even essentially conveys the same meaning but with a higher intensity of negation. Thus the sentence simplified would be: They are now a reality and are not even rare. (Not rare meaning they’re quite common)

So to answer the second TC question: (Using Greg’s method)
So this question’s a support throughout. I put the division word at “by”. The idea being supported here is that the architects are hinting at a history. How are they hinting it? By building cathedrals. Why are they hinting it? To make the city’s social struggle legitimate.

Using POE, eliminate D,E. Deserve doesn’t work, so eliminate A too. We’re left with B and C. There’s no evidence for any desire here whatsoever. The reason posses makes sense is that we’re talking about the architects building something the city doesn’t have. A building with meaning, that meaning is what they want to evoke in the city folk.

Hope this helps.

Yeah, got it now.

For the 2nd one I didn’t realize here/there were mostly expressing out of city. Now it makes sense.

Thanks alot for helping out.
