I hope its fine to discuss questions from Big Book.
I am unable to justify the answer for these questions, they are from test 11 section 3.

Answers are: 4- C, 5- D, 7- A

Question 4:

  • Right off the bat, the colon represents a support. Same ideas on both sides.
  • Focusing on the second part of the sentence, only options B,C,E would fit the second blank. (I used subject-verb agreement here). “adjustment for such use” and “application for such use” don’t work.
  • For the first blank, focus on amounts to a form of theft. Entrenched custom is essentially a body enforcing a law or a set of rules. So what would the customs office do to a form of theft? Punish it right? Option C would fit perfectly with the sentence.

Question 5:

  • Support again, because of the semi-colon.
  • Notice how they put not in the first part and not even in the second part of the sentence. Not even essentially conveys the same meaning but with a higher intensity of negation. Thus the sentence simplified would be: They are not fictional and are not even rare. (Not rare meaning they’re quite common). Option D would be correct.

Question 7:

  • The semi-colon represents a support. The idea being supported is the insignificance of species as a category for Darwin’s method.
  • The first blank is a positive word (because of not really; idea is negative but not negates the blank). Option A,B,D would fit.
  • The word “even the much more” represents the same idea but with higher intensity. I put the word formality before seeing the options. Convinience would fit the best in the second option. So the answer is A

Thanks… nicely explained all of these. I wonder how did you get the idea for 7th one, that you have mentioned in the first point.

Thank you. This makes my life easier
