Is the answer b?
I am looking at three parts of the sentence:

  1. Far from … skeptical but enlightened intellectual
  2. historians … portrayed him as ______________ thinker,
  3. eager to fill young with his political orthodoxy while censoring ideas he didn’t like

You can fill the blank using either the first or the third part.

If you use the first part:
Far from = contrast = -
So we choose the closest antonym of ā€œskeptical but enlightened intellectualā€, which would be (b) a doctrinaire

If you use the second part:
ā€œ,ā€ = support = -
So we choose the closest synonym of ā€˜eager to fill young with his political orthodoxy while censoring ideas he didn’t like’, which would be someone who is dogmatic so again (b) a doctrinaire
