I marked Irrelevant instead of surprising in this question. I am unable to find reasoning for the “surprising” choice over the “irrelevant” choice.

Apparently, it is subjective to me. Please resolve by some reasoning for the same.

The author is pointing out one of the reason why there are so many portrait painting by highlighting “artistic skill” (which is a positive) and irrelevant means inapt and if something is irrelevant then the author will not make a case for it but he did make a case for it thus, irrelevant is not the appropriate word for the blank .
