The Big Book Test 7 Sec 3 Q30

Hey, everyone! Need help with this question:
One month Mary used 1/6 of her monthly salary for a car payment and 1/4 more than the car payment for rent. What fraction of her monthly salary did Mary use that month for the car payment and rent combined?

I have problem with this part(1/4 more than the car payment for rent). I thought that its 1/6 x+1/4x.
Please help!

Hey! So it says 1/4 more than the car payment for rent. The key word here is “more”. It means whatever amount she used for car payment, she used 1/4 more of that amount for rent. I would solve this question by choosing numbers instead of algebra.
So let’s assume her monthly salary is 24$. She used 1/6 for car payment which means she used 24 * 1/6 = 4$. For rent, she used 1/4 more of 4$. So 4*1/4 = 1$. It says more so we add this 1$ to 4$. So 1+4 = 5$ which means she used 5$ for rent. The total amount she spent of rent and car payment will be 9$. Total salary was 9$. So the fraction of salary which Mary used will be 9/24 which is 3/8.

Thank you!
