So I started practicing questions from the GRE big book after completing foundation (prep swift) for the second time. Untimed, I was scoring around 27-28. I started working on a timer mid week this week and my score dropped to 26 (with calculator). Today, I’ve taken 2 sections again and my score is 22 and 24, respectively (without calculator). I’ve reattempted the questions I skipped/got wrong and I was able to solve them quite smoothly, untimed. Can someone help recommend how I can improve my score on a timer?
Getting a high score untimed suggests you have the fundamentals down.
A drop when you initially switch from untimed to timed is expected.
To improve, pay attention to discovering what caused the drop.
Was it an inability to quickly figure out what strategies to use?
Was it the actual calculations that took time?
Time management in general?
What you need to do to improve depends on what the specific problem is
I think I’ll go through the strategies again. also, sometimes, while practicing untimed, in case I get it wrong, i do check the answer key and reattempt (without googling). should I add that +1 to my score as well?
Give yourself 50 mins to do the test, and drop the timer by 5 mins each time you reach your score goal
Thanks, Ganesh. I’ve come down to 35 minutes and 28/30 however, every time I go down to 30 minutes, I end up with a 25. Any recommendations?
Secondly, I have the ETS Official Quant Reasoning Practice Questions -
- When would be the best time to start
- How should I be practising from the book? There are 3 official papers but also prior to those, we have questions pertaining to each topic separately. Guidance would be really appreciated!
Spend more time on the 35 mins I would say.
You can follow whatever is in the study plans for how to use the books
