"Unfamiliar" questions throw me off

Hello all

This is one of the many problems I figured I face - when I see a question in quant which I am not very familiar with though of course it would eventually be solved using concepts I solve - I panic!
I think the trouble is two folds

  1. I panic
  2. I am not able to think of an approach to not so typical questions

Have any of you faced this and been able to conquer it?
My test is really close so would be grateful for your advice!

I think not panicking and skipping is best strategy in this regard.

In questions that are unfamiliar, there has to be some kind of “trick” or shortcut. Try to notice those tricks and shortcuts first in an untimed setting. You’ll get better at it.

Agreed, I think reading Greg’s reddit post I took away that this is not just a maths test but a reasoning test so there might be unfamiliar questions and what matters is how well can I reason with my existing knowledge and solve the problem.
So as you suggest, skipping and saving some time to be able to think at the end may be the key.

Thanks Greg! Yes, I believe I need to have it in my mind that there would be a trick or an easy way out.

Rather than thinking I may have missed some concept and second guess myself.
