Hi everyone, I’m unable to understand why option (E) is correct even after watching Greg’s explanation for it.
The ability of humans to act rationally is mentioned in the passage as highlighted. But the passage states that “willing to assume the human risks of acting rationally”.
I took this to mean to there are risks when humans act rationally. Since the question asks what great comic art is optimistic about, I eliminated option (E) since it is explicitly stated that there are risks to act rationally.
I can do something with risks and still be optimistic about my ability to do it - Cave exploration for example. Risk and optimism are not always opposite.
Optimism is trust that you can succeed despite the risk, not a claim that no risk exists.
In the context of this question/passage, the author argues that GREAT comic doesn’t treat humans as gods (ie beings without limitations or risks). It recognizes that “we are human, even though we try to be gods.”
The comic community is then described positively as “reasoning, loving, joyful, compassionate” and willing to assume the human risks of acting rationally. Great comic art, acc to psg arouses courage in reason, courage which grows from “trust in what humans can do as humans”.
Trust in what humans can do as humans despite the risks = optimism
