Can anyone explain how to apply the right strategy here?
The process I applied was:
Idea chunk 1 is ‘in searching…to be’ → there’s a search for authoritative rules
Idea chunk 2 is ‘rather than…normal’ → sets up a contrast, that we’re not okay with just the normal/ average things
Idea chunk 3 is ‘normative ethics aims to _______’
Idea chunks 1 and 3 are in support because of the comma, but I couldn’t really come to a good guess for the blank here other than ‘define’
Normative ethics defineswhat ought to be, not what is.
All there if left to do is eliminate the options,
a) predict - guesses what might be in the future not what ought to be
b) obvious elimination. Means to lessen something, which doesn’t fit with “setting standards.”
c) we are not asking questions but defining standards
e) personalize - standards suggests universal rules and not personal rules
We are left with
d) dictate fits because it defines standards for what ought to be with authority which fits the Idea 1 so closely.
