Verbal Solving help

To pundits the author’s latest work was ___________ ; with so few people purchasing the book, this critical reception proved to be __________.

Blank (i)
(i) undistinguished (ii)puzzling (iii)captivating

Blank (ii)
(i)discomfiting (ii)ambivalent (iii) ironic

I tried this question by support and contrast, for blank 2 , we have commma the support, so I chose discomfiting and since first blank is a support I chose undistinguished .

But the answers are capticating and ironic,I am not able to get the contrast.

@Ryan , can you help me with this

To pundits the author’s latest work was ___________ ; with so few people purchasing the book, this critical reception proved to be __________.

I see this as a double possibility: Either (Case 1) experts think the latest work was great, but with few people buying it, this reception was not what was expected or (Case 2) experts think the latest work was bad; with few people buying it, this reception was correct

We find case 1 in the blanks:
Blank 1 - Great → captivating
Blank 2 - Not as expected → ironic

We don’t see “correct” in blank 2, so we can rule out case 2.

Hope that helps!

yeah I am confused about double possibility and the simple approach for double blank, what i thought is we have a clue few poeple purchasing(that kind of clues is not given in double possibility) how did you see it.

Double Possibility: Often, there can be two possible answer pairs to a given sentence. You have to look at the answer choices to see which one of the pairs is there.

I would watch the video for double possibility under either PrepSwift Verbal or go to the 1 month plan and find the TC/SE video which covers this strategy. You will identify it over time after seeing a few examples

Meticulous to a fault, Sarah is often considered __________; unless, of course, her consummate eye for detail works in one’s favor.

(i)obstinate (ii) precocious (iii) wayward (iv) perfunctory (v)persnickety

I had doubt in this question,
in this we won’t be looking at unless we would be focussing on (;), and the idea , would be her focussing on details, is that the right way to think this question.
