Verbal Text Completion- Big Book- GRE- Test 17- Section 1

Good afternoon everyone!

I had some confusion with the logic of the below mentioned TC problem:

William James lacked the usual _______ death; writing to his dying father, he spoke without ______ about the old man’s impending death.

a. longing for… regret
b. awe of…inhibition
c. curiosity about…rancor
d. apprehension of…eloquence
e. anticipation of…commiseration

Thanks in advance.

Cheers!

I will approach blank (i) WJ lacked the usual ____ death (What the usual response when someone talks about death ? -->fear/ horror/wonderstruck) → Option that matches my guess B and E.

Blank (ii) Now if WJ got no fear of death so how will he write to his dying father → naturally or without any restriction —> Option that matches my guess B

Ans. B

Thanks for your response! But I used the guessing strategy by trying to ascertain the logic of the sentence so I filled it up with a word like “emotional concern” (the whole meaning of the sentence somewhat relating to apathetic) and I used the same word in the next blank too.
