Very confused by this one. Could someone help explain it?

I’m confused on how one or both of them must be zero. I feel like I’m goin crazy lol. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

\begin{aligned} (a+b)^2 &= a^2+b^2+2ab\\ a^2+b^2+2ab &= a^2+b^2\\ 2ab &=0 \\ ab &=0 \end{aligned}

so, either a , b or both a and b must be 0

Awesome, thank you. Makes sense now.
