What tells me i can just minus or plus 2 whole equations?

To me i originally thought i had to meet some type of requirement before being able to maniuplate the 2 equations. In this case, I thought i had to make products the same so what I did was multiply everything by 2 in the bottom equation to make the 6 into 12, then i can start playing with the equations. But Greg straight up just BOOM (+) them together and gets the answer. When there are 2 equations like this, am I able to just add or subtract them?

we can always add / subtract equations in a system - the question is only: does it do anything useful. Here it does since we’re finding (x-y) not solving for the individual variables, so an operation that creates something that looks like x-y helps.

Gotta love when vince replies, Thank you!
