I understand noisome and fetid fits here but why not noxious. Do we need to such critical differentiation between meanings?

‘Noxious’ means ‘harmful or dangerous’. There’s nothing that pairs with that and if you look at the sentence, it talks about olfactory senses (smell). And both noisome and fetid mean ‘having unpleasant or foul smell’.

yeah going down to specific meanings that makes sense. I didn’t know the meaning of fetid that’s why I chose noxious and got it wrong.
