Why not D - Impermissable? Math Strategy Verbal

In the below question, this was my approach to solving it via the math strategy (Vocab 1 month plan, Week 1, Day 3 Homework):

In the seventeenth century, direct flouting of a generally accepted system of values was regarded as ________, even as a sign of madness.
(A) adventurous
(B) frivolous
(C) willful
(D)impermissible
(E)irrational

  1. Flout = Negative, so we’re looking for contrast
  2. Generally accepted, means positive, so we need a negative word against or opposite of that, meaning ‘not accepted’
  3. And to this, the only option which stood out was ‘impermissable’ = D

Where am I going wrong and how do I improve my understanding of the math strategy?

Flout is negative so we’re looking for a negative idea in the blank

Why?

Because there is no contrast within the sentence, only support i.e the commas

Being negative isn’t a source of contrast in itself

However that doesn’t get us to our answer

We then need the contextual clue that comes from the part of the sentence that says “even as a sign of madness” which supports the blank

So we have a negative word that’s representing the idea of madness

Hence the correct answer should stand out
