Working against eachother

I’m kind of embarrassed that I’m not getting the same solution because I understand the whole thing and theory but still I get 24 and in the video the answer given is 56.What am I overlooking

Isn’t it so that
320 = (40 - x ) . 20
320 / 20 = 40 - x
16 = 40 - x
-24 = -x and so x = 24?

where does 56 come from :frowning:

Good elf works for 8 hours alone to make 40 \times 8 =320 as he does 120 toys in 3 hrs thus, \frac{120}{3} =40 toys/hr.

Bad Elf should work for the next 20 hours so that that there are no toys remaining thus,

\underbrace{320}_{\textsf{Good elf 8hr}} + \overbrace{(40-x)\cdot20}^{\textsf{Bad Elf 20hr}} =0\\ 320+800 -20x =0 \\ x=56

The elves are enemies; Bob’s goal isn’t to make the same number of elves as the “good elf”.

A doubt! Is the total time with both the good elf and bad elf working = 20 hrs and then we’ve additional 8 hr from good elf alone ?

I don’t know; I’ll get this flagged as I suspect we have an ambiguous question.

Sorry should have indicated, indeed the question was adjusted after the video because the total time is 28 hours not 20 in total.

Ah ok so, yes this makes sense. So then what’s in the video stating
320 = (40-x) . 20 is not the proper way of setting up the equation because that will never turn into 56, right?
