We can use previously referenced strategy here to tackle the first blank. Notice the phrase “that lost certainty” in the second clause of the sentence. The article “that” is referring to the “belief” mentioned in the first part of the sentence. Accordingly whatever word we put in the first blank should suggest that people “lost certainty” in this belief. “No longer convinced by” or even “No longer certain of” [reusing the exact phrasing from the second half] would make sense.
